Exclusive CCTV recordings obtained by KTN News have revealed the last movements of journalist Amos Maina, who collapsed and died inside a Nairobi bar. Maina, a former Standard Group reporter, was later confirmed through a post-mortem to have ingested a toxic substance that killed him instantly.
How the Day Unfolded
Footage shows Maina arriving at a bar along Mirema Drive at 4:18 p.m. He greeted a man and a woman before joining another group at a different table, where he shared drinks. At 4:54 p.m., a woman spoke briefly with him. He later moved to play pool at around 5:02 p.m., returning briefly to his seat at 5:45 p.m. before heading back to the pool area.
The Critical Drink
At 7:47 p.m., Maina ordered a drink that was delivered to his table. He then sat with the woman who served him, and a second woman joined them shortly afterward. Both women were seen interacting with him, with one of them also sipping the drink. At 8:01 p.m., Maina suddenly drifted off while seated, appearing to lose consciousness. He stayed slumped on the table for nearly an hour.
The Moment Everything Changed
At 9:22 p.m., his head fell backward, indicating a critical medical emergency. A waitress attempted to help him, unaware he had already passed away. At 9:34 p.m., the woman who had been drinking with him returned with a man to check on him, but Maina was already unresponsive.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation
Shortly before 10 p.m., two more patrons checked his breathing. His brother arrived at 10:49 p.m., distressed and attempting to revive him with no success. Maina’s wife entered the premises at 11:02 p.m., and his body was removed from the bar six minutes later.
Detectives are now working to identify the toxic substance found in his body and determine how it was introduced. The DCI is expected to release a full toxicology report as investigations continue.
